Dash knob removal
« on: December 07, 2012, 09:15:44 AM »
A local fellow is restoring an already nice 53 HJ. He called last nite asking about dash knob removal and I realized that I'd never removed any from a J so I couldn't answer him. I know the full size cars used a spring loaded tab that had to be depressed to get the knob off the shaft but wasn't sure if the J's used the same set up.

I do have a vent knob assembly here and see how it comes out but it's the headlight switch and choke knobs he's asking about.

Hi Jim, the "L" (light) and "H" (heater blower) knobs on the J have a metal tab/clip that you need to get at from the bottom rear of the knob. With a small blade screwdriver, press it toward the knob itself and it will release the knob and simply pull it off.  The "C" (choke), "V" (vent) knobs are glued to the cable and must be crushed/broken to remove. Rudy's produces new ones which can be fastened with a good epoxy glue or "Liquid Nails" works pretty well.  The windsheild wiper knob, which on a '53 J is directly above the ignition switch, simply pulls off.  I believe Rudy has all of these knobs available as repros.  They look great when you get all new ones.
