Wiper vacuum assist connections?

I'm replacing the fuel pump and noticed that the old one had the wiper vacuum assist ports plugged and the wiper hose connecting directly to the manifold. I see in the service manual that the line from the manifold goes into the front of the fuel pump and then from the back it goes up to the wiper motor. Does that sound correct? I'll need to get some new steel (are they steel or aluminum?) hose and compression fittings. Will I be able to pick up the steel(?) hose and fittings from an auto parts store?

I kept the non vacuum assist fuel pump in my HJ. I installed a brass fitting in the manifold and then attached a short length of small brake line. I bent the brake line about 45 degrees and cut it approx. 12 in long. Then I attached a rubber hose that ran from the brake line to the wiper motor.

Here's a pic with the hard lines attached to the fuel pump. The rear line comes up behind the carb - the rubber hose from the pump attaches to it.

Jim, the hook-ups in the vacuum section of the fuel pump are marked "In" and "Out."  I didn't post a picture because I think mine may be backwards.  The line coming out of the manifold goes to the "Out" and the one going to the wiper motor is connected to "In"

I don't know if that is correct - it seems backward to me.  Comments anyone?

BTW, I never use the wipers, I just put Rain-X on and you don't need them. I would like to hook them up correctly just the same.

The engine in my post is in my 54 HJ. The lines are the originals and the wipers work (amazingly) so I'm guessing they're connected correctly.

Thank you for the reply joefrazer. Would you happen to know how long both of those lines are? NAPA sells pre-made lines with the compression fittings already attached that I would like to use.

The carb vaccum goes to the in side of the pump,the out side of the pump goes to the wiper motor.Very easy to remember,vacuum in,vacuum out. Larry

I am very much surprised that plugging both sides of the vacuum part of the pump did not cause serious problems.
