Chrome plating cable ends??
« on: May 23, 2018, 12:21:23 PM »
I just got back from the plater and was told these cable ends need to disassembled before plating can take place.   How are these disassembled???   There are three kinds, the choke cable bezel on the cable housing, the choke cable Knob on the cable itself and the Hood cable assembly with the swedged end next to it. that has both problems.  The cables are from my Darrin but would be on anything Kaiser.

HELP!!!

These parts are not really made to be disassembled although it probably could be done.  From your illustration it looks like a little triple o steel wool and some polish would make them look much nicer.  New ones don't show up on eBay very often.

If your cable ends are attached like Aero ends, the flex cable housing inserts a short ways into the metal sleeve, is swaged/crimped and may also have a small spot weld. These can be carefully deconstructed and reassembled, taking care to not insert the flex too deep when re-swaging or your knob shaft won't push in flush. I also used split collars for good measure on some since I didn't spot weld.
If I were to do this again, I'd definitely get the Harbor Freight swager.

Most chrome shops can chrome the handles connected to the cable. The flex can be cleaned nicely with a wire wheel.
I would not take them apart.
