Pertronix Solid-State Ignition

Anyone running a Pertronix Solid-State Ignition system in a 51-55 Kaiser or have any experience/opinions on it?  Some Stude guys I know swear by these systems as they replace the points, etc. and are "hidden" under the distributor cap and are undetectable from the outside.  Supposedly the advantage is not burning points, better ignition timing, no mopre setting points, etc.  If so, what model do you use?

I have used them in a couple of my mercury cougars,

I have a 73 XR7 Conv with the 351CJ engine, I have had the pertronix in that car for 13 years, and I have them in my 71 XR7 with the 429CJ engine for eight years.


I have not had any problems and am completely satisfied.

I replaced another Pertronix set up yesterday afternoon. One of the cars in the collection, a '65 Mustang convertible with a 289, needed to be moved from one end of the building to the other. Start, quit, start, quit, installed the new points and condensor, perfect! No more Pertronix for me!

A friend had the setup installed on his 49F. At idle or low speeds it did OK but at anything over 40 mph, the thing acted like it was starving for fuel. We tinkered with the fuel system and finally decided to swap distributors. With the old points system back in, the car runs fine.

I tried it.  The kit I had was supposed to be for our positive ground and six volt.  Neither my mechanic nor I could get this set up to work.  I've been told that the problem is with the lower voltage of our cars.  But I've also read that people who have six-volt Studebakers use the set up and it works fine. I gave up and went back to old reliable points.

per tronics kits are available thru ed ewing, member for 6 volt
