'53 Dragon sells at auction for $37.400

According to the new Hemmings this maroon with white top and wire wheeled beauty sold at Scottsdale AZ in late Jan.  Their figures claim the average price sold for a Dragon is $38,400.  Maybe they are the next Darrin and values are on their way up.  Hemmings also reported that a  Cadillac powered green Darrin brought  $128,800 at Sotheby's in January. and their average selling price is $137,000.   Maybe we should be selling our cars there in Arizona!

I've been keeping track to sales based on the cross-sections of cars in the various HEMMINGS publications.  So far in 2018, the percentages show most cars reported sold for less than estimated or expected values.   Because of government trade policies and the retalitations taken by other nations against the USA, a good part of a significant buying segment (overseas clients) is drying up.  Some feel that the overseas car nut was the prop that supported the recent wave of unexpectedly high sales.   Let's see what the rest of 2018 brings.

good point.  The prices I looked at were supposed to include the commissions.  If that is correct, the actual cash amount going to the seller is even less.

Yes, With an Auction You know what it Sold for, buts What's Commission ?  If You register to bid they tell You the Terms & percentages for Auction House.

I have often wondered how Many buy later & not let it sell at Auction ?

My opinion is Hemmings Estimates are a bunch of B.S. 

Dragons that "average" $38,400?  That is too homogenous.  Is that a #2 car only, or a #1 + ?  OK, then how many are sold in a given period to claim that as an average?  And where is Hemmings getting that information.  For $38K to be an average, and they use a statistical amount of 6 #1 + Dragons annually, then 3 sold for $25,000 and 3 sold for $51,000, right?  That's a simplification, but so is their stab in the air of $38,400! 

Few are restoring Dragons due to complications and the overall hand wringing trying to over-restore one that happens. [i.e. several coats of primer, hand rubbed between coats with 4000 grit sandpaper, then paint, see above ]   

I think we have one forum member in Florida restoring 1 or 2. 

If you have a 55 Chevy 2 door Bel Air, then you have a large enough "gene pool" to determine statistical averages. But not with a Dragon....
