Interchange parking brake Y cable
« on: August 17, 2020, 02:33:57 PM »
Anyone know of an interchange rear Y cable for the parking brake on a 51?

Seems the Kaiser NOS versions are rare...as in non-existent, and given their history of using available parts from other sources, it seems unlikely they designed their own, rather than using a stock part available at the time?  But perhaps they did given the X-member design of the chassis?

Er...one more question...were there variations on this cable for different models, or was it the same part across the board?

Thanks guys!

The rear brake cable on a 51 Kaiser is unique to the year. The part number differs for 1952 so something changed in the cable's design. I would imagine that the later cable can be used on the 1951 car, but you'd have to compare the two to be sure.

There's a couple guys on ebay that claim to have thousands of vintage brake cables. They shouldn't be to hard to find. Northwesternautosupply in MI might be worth a call as well.

The difference in the 1951 Kaiser rear cable and the 1952-1954 Kaiser rear cable is in the hangers.  The 1951 cable has a pre-installed hanger and the other years use the separate 'hook' hanger.  The difference in the emergency cable systems is in the front cable.  The difference was required to accommodate the automatic transmission verses the standard transmission.  A 1952 rear cable will work well in a 1951 as long as you use the 'hook' hangers.  Both items are available from Rudy Phillips of California.

Got the cable yesterday, but no original box so no part number to check.

Anyone familiar enough with the 51 Y cable that if I posted a pic, they could tell me if it appears to be correct?

Thanks guys!

Thanks Joe!

Does the pic below look correct for a 51 Deluxe?

like rrdcorvair said the 51 is different than the 52 through 55 the one you have pictured is 52-55 but is usable with the correct hangers.

Thanks VT!

Just talked to Larry Barker and he has the hangers, but says a competent mechanic could make them out of a coat hanger, and I do have a competent mechanic.  :)
