Pertronix ignition on a Kaiser
« on: May 29, 2008, 10:14:22 PM »
Has anyone ever installed the Pertronix Electronic ignition on their Kaiser?  I am trying to do so on my 1951 Kaiser, but the diagram is not entirely clear.  I am using the original 6 Volts and Positive Ground.  It says that one of the wires from the ignitor has to go to the ignition switch wire.  Which one is that exactly?  Any help with this system would be appreciated.  Marysville, WA

I have not done this, nor do I know anyone who has, but the ignition switch wire connects to the negative side of the coil (assuming the car is still stock, 6 volt + ground) so you should be able to connect it right to that wire ( it's the coil wire that does not go to the distibutor).

Of course, the white wire to the coil!!  Thanks for the help!  I have kept it stock other than this upgrade, new wiring, and radial tires.  I may also try LED tail lights as the stock ones are not very bright.  I am trying to get it running for the National in Portland, OR.  I wasn't sure of the location of the ign. wire that they are talking about.  Now I know, thanks!

Yes, I'd be interested to know what you come up with concerning 6 volt LED's.  All the LED's I've seen are for 12 volt systems.

I found this link via the Hudson or Studebaker club sites.
http://www.highspeedmotors.com/Webled.html
This company says that they have 6v positive ground LED Taillights which should fit our 1158-base sockets.  I haven't gotten any yet, but everything I see on their site indicates it would work for our cars.  They draw much less power, and are brighter than the original incandescent bulbs, and they will last virtually forever.  I also remember seeing some at an old car swap meet recently.  That company was called "Flip Flop LED" in Ashford, WA.   www.flipflopled.com

Before you use these, be sure you understand the ramifications to your turn signal flasher!

I recently had an experience with Pertronix electronic ignition, but it was on a Ford 8N tractor. I wasn't getting spark on the tractor and I was reluctant about probing because this was a pre1950 8N with the front mounted distributor. Well, there is actually space to service the front mounted distributor without involving the fan or radiator.
I was expecting stock Ford points and condenser but to my surprise, there was a Pertronix unit. I was afraid the unit (pickup & electronics) was zapped, but it turned out to be decayed wiring from the previous owner and a misalignment of the coil (you would have to be familiar with an 9/2/8N tractor to understand).
The important part here is the Pertronix unit has 2 leads and the red or white lead goes to the + side of the coil and the black lead goes to the - side of the coil. Run a search on the internet and it will turn up wiring diagrams for Pertonix units.
The official plug gap on these vehicles is .025!  It is relatively easy to get to the plugs from the side with a 13/16 box end wrench and I think I will explore .030 or even .035.
