HJ fuel pump Installation

I have a ,52 HJ, 6cyl. I pulled the Carter pump #M809S.sent to Then and Now for a rebuild. I pulled the pump in a hurry before sending it off. Now since it time to put it back on,I find that their
is not much room for me to install it. Do I have to pull the motor? Jack the motor up on one side?ANY HELP ON THIS ONE!

You should have enough clearance to install the pump.  According to the factory shop manual, you do NOT have to take out the engine, raise one side of the engine, etc.  That's only exotic sports cars and Pontiac Fiero 2-doors.  It's a simple 5 step procedure.  The trick is to make sure that the pump's striker sits correctly on the camshaft correctly.

I've done it numerous times, using the Carter and AC pumps and it was always quite easy.  Do you have any pictures to share?  There may be something different about it but it sounds like you have the correct pump. 
See attached for pictures of mine.  One thing about the pics is the car was originally a four cylinder so I had to redo the steel line for the wiper but other than that this is what it looks like.

It is a bit of a tight fit but it's not difficult to get it to fit as I recall. Is it possible that Then-and-Now put the covers back on it with the bolt holes shifted so the inlets/outlets are not in the right place? That is easy to do and easy to correct.

Funny you should say something about Then-and-Now may have clocked the top lid incorrectly. They did just that when they did mine. It was not a big issue for me to re-clock it to the correct position for my Henry J. I still recommend Then-and-Now for their rebuild kits and rebuilding service.

AZ, you said exactly what I was trying to say.  Larry, check it out compared to the pictures and see if your's is correct. The positioning of the top one does not matter  much but the bottom one does. The bottom one should be as shown (for function, not fit) in the second picture I posted. The fuel inlet (bottom section) facing straight back and the outlet to the carb between the 4 and 5 o'clock position when viewing it from behind as in the picture.

Here's another pic I found.



I took this when I was going to rebuilt one a few years ago. The one on the left is an NOS unit and the upper and lower inlets/outlets on it are correct. The one on the right I rebuilt. In picture the upper inlets/outlets are correct but the lower ones are off. I had to remove the screws that hold the lower section on and shift it one bolt hole to the right so it would match the NOS one.

Thanks To FID And AZ on the pump installation. The top after rebuild was 180 degree's off, the bottom looks correct. Still my problem is getting the darn thing on.I have turn the pump every way I know how,I will keep trying tommorrow.Wish me luck,

could it be that the engine mounts have compressed and the engine is now closer to the frame rail?

Terry,the rubber pads on the mounts look compress to a point. The pan looks very close to the cross member at  the front. Maybe this is the problem.I will try again this afternoon,Will keep you posted.

Using 1/4" longer bolts to snug up the pump may help.  Then remove one bolt at a time and replace with the original shorter bolt.  Not too long or you may hit the camshaft.   Studs with a screwdriver slot with hex nuts works well also.  Probably 5/16-18 size.
