Allstate for sale
« on: November 20, 2010, 07:57:16 PM »
I just noticed that Seth Jones of San Marcos CA near San Diego has just listed a 1953 Allstate 4 cylinder with overdrive on eBay.  It has the usual rocker panel and floor rust but looks pretty nice and has all of the emblems.  Starting bid is a reasonable $3,500 and he already has one bid.  Allstates do not come on the market very often.

I keep looking at it Gordie. I appears to have potential.  Don't think I can work it in at this time but it would be fun to have a rare bird like that.

All I need is another project but if it were a six cylinder I would sure try to find a way.  They are quite scarce.  I hope one of us can get it and keep it from being another race car!

That's pretty reasonable, even for a four cylinder. It's a very rare car.

Hello all. I am new to this. I am the one that bought the Allstate in San Marcos, CA. I live in Surprise, AZ. I am planning a restoration on the car. It will not be a hot rod. My family owned 6 Henry J's when I was growing up and 1 was an Allstate. I hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew. This will be a first for me. Any information on the restoration would be appreciated. Does the body have to come off to replace the floorboards and rockers? Thanks, Bill.

hello and welcome,

I live just down the street from you in Sun City. I am doing a full body off restoration of a 1952 Henry J Vagabond Deluxe.

If you need any help just drop me a line. We have a good club in the Phoenix area. We are having our x-mass party this Sunday. I would love for you to come as my guest. If that is something you like e-mail me and I will give you all the details.

Best,

Mark

Welcome to the hobby. I'm glad that car will be restored.  As I mentioned, it's a rare one and being that it has the four cylinder engine, that means parts are even easier to find for it as Jeep used that engine from the 1940s up into the 1960s so there's plenty of parts available for it.  There is also an abundance of Henry J / Allstate knowledge on this forum.
Regarding if the body should be removed to fix the floors - Kaiser Bill in Utah highly recommends it. He had a good section on this website demonstating how he did it.  He's got a document here:

http://www.kaiserbill.com/Web-PDF/Sub-Frame-Kit.pdf

There is a seller on ebay who sells floor panels for the Henry J. Perhaps someone else can comment on if they're any good or not as I have no first hand knowledge.
I'll be at visiting my parents in Tucson over X-mas and my father has a pretty nice Henry J at his place. If you're down in that area at all between X-mas and New Years let me know.

I just purchase a set of outside rockers for my henry j from these guys. the price was more than right and they have the correct taper to them. That is something outher fabricators has missed and it shows on the car.
