Hydra-Matic Reverse

I have a 1952 Kaiser with dual-range Hydra-Matic Transmission........ Very hard to shift into reverse.  Can anybody please help with suggestions to repair/fix?  Also, adjusting shifting sequence....... Seems to shift too soon into second.

It sounds like the linkage needs adjusted. About the early shift...follow this sequence, with the engine shut off and the car in reverse...under the car is an arm that sticks out of the left side of the transmission. Attached to it is a long rod that eventually ends up at the top end of the engine where the rest of the accelerator linkage is attached. At the lower end, the rod is threaded and there are two bolts that hold it to the arm that sticks out of the transmission. Loosen the upper bolt and slide the arm up the long rod. Try 3 or 4 turns of the bolt. Then, run the lower bolt up to snug everything in place. Drive the car to see if the shift is any better. What this does is to increase throttle pressure to increase the shift point. It'll probably take some experimenting to get it right as every transmission wears differently.

About the reverse, the above might cure the problem, as it sounds like it's a linkage issue. Check to make sure that everything is snug.

It also helps to slip a 1/4th diameter dowl or drill into the cross linkage on top of the head, and adjust the carbureator linkage via the 3/8 bolt before going under the car per the manual.
