Am I right in assuming that the camshaft has a gear on it driving the distributor and oil pump and that if the rotor turns while the engine is being cranked, the camshaft is intact?

Yes, the camshaft has a gear that drives another gear on the oil pump shaft. The end of the shaft is splined and that drives a shaft that connects to the distributor. If the rotor turns, the the camshaft is turning too.
