Virginian K492-036481 Finally Delivered!

My Virginian was finally delivered with a 1950 Kaiser parts car. Door jamb plates shows K492-036481.  I hope I have successfully attached some photos.  Rear Virginian glass is good. Car is complete but rough.  Parts car is a disapointment. No drivetrain but interior is complete. The speedometer interestingly (in the parts car) still has the break in sticker on it.

Garage is tight but I should have room to tear it down. Rust in the front floor pan. 1950 Kaiser parts car - what should I pull in one week to support the Virginian?   1950 Special has some parts to support, but not much?  Pull the doors?  Rear glass is good.  The parts car will be gone in a week.  It is straight so wondering how hard the front fenders are to pull.  Pans are good.  Has seats and wonder how hard it would be to just get the doors off and get them in with all interior hardware intact for later dismantle time.

Pull out the 1949 Kaiser and Frazer Parts Book and look at what is compatiable for the Virginian. You will find that most sheet metal is NOT compatable.  Even less will work if the parts car is a special rather than a Deluxe.

That looks like a fun project.  Hey, A Virginian is a Virginian.  I think almost all sheetmetal below the beltline is identical between hardtops and regular sedans.  Looks like your correct trunk hinges are there. Those are a pain to find. Mine were missing on  my 51F convertible.

I think almost all sheetmetal below the beltline is identical between hardtops and regular sedans.  Looks like your correct trunk hinges are there. Those are a pain to find. Mine were missing on  my 51F convertible.

That's how I knew the parts car was a 1950, it's hinges are internal.

Looks like a good builder. Whatever you do, if you have to remove the rear glass, do everything you can to save the gasket. There are no replacements available and I've not heard of any from another make/model that can be modified to fit. I've been amassing parts for a hopeful 51F hardtop restoration and I can tell you that just about everything else can be had...except for that rear window gasket...

Actually, only hardtops (ie Virginians and '51 F Manhattans) and convertibles had the external chrome hinges.  All other '47-50 Kaisers and '47-'51 Frazers had internal trunk hinges. 

The more I stare at your car, I think it is an identical twin to mine.  Looks like it was originally Polar Gray with Teal nylon roof covering and turquoise Stockholm/Beaumont cloth interior with blue dash.  Cool.

The tag info is already posted, up towards the top of page one.  It is the same as yours.  The car has the 612th Virginian body.  Unfortunately, the company was starting to build to order at this point so that does not mean the 612th one off the line. 

As I said earlier, the doors do NOT swap out; Pages 228 and 232 of the 1949 Kaiser-Frazer Parts List show that Virginian doors swap with Convertible, and the sedan doors are different.

You really need the parts book to avoid frustration and a lot of dead ends during restoration.

Well I hope yours is original and restored because I will need to see what I need to do.  Can someone give me a "ballpark" figure non what the trim code means?  Stockholm and Beaumont mean nothing to me. The seats have covers on them that I have not removed yet.

I know, I mean the sheet metal is the same from the beltiline down.  KF simply cut up a sedan door to make the convertible/hardtop doors.  The door skin from a sedan is is identical to a hardtop/convertible door once you cut it off at the proper point.  I used a salvage lower sedan skin on the passenger front door of my '51F convertible.  They are the same thing.

The car is a dead-new 12K original mile car that was chauffer driven and parked in a dry garage and forgotten about in '58.  The interior is almost flawless original upholstery, including the carpet.  If you need any detail info. during the restoration, let me know.

Stockholm and Beaumont are two types of upholstery fabric; your car had cloth interior rather than leather which is found on a lot of the later (980 or so total built) Virginians.

Parts books show up from time to time on eBay as well as the FOR SALE section of the KFOCI MONTHLY BULLETIN.  If you are having problems finding a book, send Barbara a note for the WANTED section of the bulletin.
