The 51-5 Kaisers used a Dana 44. I think the HJ used a Dana 27.

No, it is worse than that. HJs used a Dana 23. Studebaker Champions and Ramblers also used this axle. Notice these are all small cars with small displacement 4 & 6 cylinder engines.
Low hp Studebaker V8s used Dana 27 axles.
