Found! Blast Away - 48 Kaiser
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:00:50 PM »
For those of you newer to the KFOCI, we had a member who lived on the west coast and when a national meet was held back east, John would jump in Blast Away, his 48 Kaiser, and head east. The car was (and maybe still is) equipped with an extra fuel tank as well as a manifold holding 2 carburetors. His wife said that 85-90 mph was his average speed and stopping enroute only happened to eat and refuel.

It's for sale on the west coast...

I remember seeing that car at the Wisconsin Dells ('71) or Dearborn ('74) national. It had two carburettors on it as mentioned. I also saw it at John Parker's house when I was visiting my folks in 2001. We spent an afternoon visiting with the Parkers and it looked much the same. My guess is the seller is Rudy Philips. It's a cool car and if I remember correctly, John Parker often pulled a trailer with it.

Man do I wish I could afford that car. It's exactly the same as mine. It would be perfect to help guide me in putting mine back together.

Please be more specific on the "2" carberators.  That implies a custom manifold, like an Offenhauser.  I didn't know anything existed.

For the 1947-50 model cars that used a 1bbl carb, Edmunds produced a 2 carb setup that increased performance. They also produced an aluminum head. I have one of the intakes and plan to use it on my Traveler.

Interesting.  The aluminum head would be sweet, especially if it eeked out a slight compression increase.  Would add 7-10 hp right there.
No old cars owned.

Tom Lockley was the owner of BlastAway. He bought it out of John's estate. Since he lives in Orange County, I'll guess the craigslist ad to be his. He drove his other Kaiser, the Surfboard Special, to Nashville from southern California in 1994.

Yes, Aeroman is right.  It is Tom Lockleys in Orange County, CA.  Tom needs to sell due to no storage.  I offered him to store it at my house when he moves at the end of the month, he might take me up on it.
Awesome, powerful little car.  Hopefully it stays in the club.

Yes, John Parker towed a lot with that car.  It still has a hitch.

Here's a pic of Blastaway, for those of you that have a soft spot for this car. I have some fond memories of it. It can also be found in the color photo gallery at the back of Last Onslaught.

Aeroman, it can be in Atlanta in about three days from California.  Give Tom a call and buy it!

I'd love to own that car with all it's history, but I'm trying to get Old Toby ready for the trip to Shipshewanna this summer - all I need is to put funds in a different direction like Blastaway. Maybe if I win Lotto....

As of last month, Tom found a way to keep it and move at same time, so it did not sell but he is keeping it.  In next few weeks we will be putting new master cylinder in it in my garage.

You should see it again some day. Still nice car that definitely has a name for itself.  Just like Tom Lockley's previous '49 Surfboard Special
