Missing Something?
« on: November 26, 2013, 04:47:28 AM »
The back of the front seat in my '53 Manhattan has several small holes in it. It appears to have held an ashtray at one time maybe? Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like?

And on the Manhattans and Dragons it had a lighter built in. I know on the '51 Kaiser special I had there was no lighter in the rear ashtray.

Lighters for the back of the front seat ashtray were NOT available in the 1951 Special 4-door but was in the arm rest of 2-door sedans and Travelers.

Thanks guys. I found several types of Kaiser ashtrays on EBAY, I just needed to know which one was correct. So my '53 Manhattan would have had a lighter in there. I was looking at pictures of one listed on EBAY and I can't tell if the lighter is there or if it has some kind of block off plate on the lighter hole. Can someone tell me (or show me) what the lighter looks like? Here's a picture of the EBAY ashtray.

53 Kaiser Manhattans with 4 Doors have an ashtray mounted on the back of the front seat with a cigar lighter inside the ashtray.
In the front the ashtray is on the lower center of the dash with the ligher in the dash next to the ignition switch.
We drove this 53 Manhattan 4 Door for 14 years but no longer own it ... sob sob. :'(

As a 53 Manhattans is what we are working on currently we have scanned the wiring diagram out of the manual and printed it 4 feet X 3 Feet and mounted it on the shop wall for reference ... comes in handy and I can read the fine print.

The second pic shows the Cigar lighter with its 12-B wire.

53 Kaiser Manhattan 2 Doors have a different Ashtray arrangement.
As the front seat splits to provide access to the back seat for seating there is no place there for the Ashtray.
So the armrests in the rear have ashtrays inside of them -  No Cigar Lighter.

We are also working on a 2 Door Carolina which was being Manhattanized - Sort of.
When the individual working on this Carolina to make it into a Manhattan (WHY?) He went to one of our KF Vendors for Rear Armrests for his 2 Door that would be correct of a Manhattan.

He was sold armrests for a 4 Door Manhattan, and TWO 4 door Manhattan rear ashtrays to mount on each of the rear seat panels.  I would not believe it if I did not have the invoice / receipt.

This ashtray / lighter is what you need for your 4 Dr Manhattan front seat back.

Hope this helps you understand what you are missing!!   ;D

Thank you Jim. That is exactly what I needed to see. Looks like the lighter is missing in both of the ashtrays currently on EBAY. Guess I'll have to keep looking. Thanks again for taking the time to post the pictures. Very helpful.
