Master cylinder interchange

There is a NOS EIS brand master cylinder on ebay for sale. It shows it is for Kaisers, as well as 48-62 Studebakers, and a few others. I didn't know the Kaiser master cylinder was the same as Studebakers. Can anyone confirm this? Studebaker master cylinders are readily available. I have a 53 Manhattan and was wondering if they are the same, any ideas? thanks.

The United or Lockheed Wagner 2796 master cylinder interchanges with several cars including the Kaiser, Frazer, some Nashes and Ramblers, some Packards, and Studebakers '47-64 nd some Jeeps through 1971. It also goes by various other part numbers like F36313 and E39947. Most often you see it listed for 1950-51 Ford.  NAPA lists is as UP 2796 while CarQuest uses E2796.

51-55 use a different MC--same as 49-51 Ford. There is a Wagner number in the club handbook but I don't know if still available or not.

I can see that Doc has never worked on a Kaiser brake system. Master Cylinder #2796 fits a number of applications including (most but not all) Studebakers, HJs and pre-51 Kaisers (and Cushman scooters) BUT NOT 51-55 Kaisers! If you want a replacement MC for a 51-55 Kaiser, you want the same item that is used on 49-53 Fords.  The brand new unit I have for my car has the Lockheed Wagneer Number F36313 on the box.

Lets see if I can get some image links working. This is an image I made to help a member about 7 years ago in fixing the brakes on a 51 Carribean Coral Deluxe (just like I have) http://images112.fotki.com/v588/photos/1/17834/80675/5155MC_Linkage-vi.jpg The 2796 master cylinder doesn't have holes with bushings for the brake pedal linkage.

Thanks so much for the info. The picture really helped in the fact I can see the difference. The Studebaker M/C is the same on all cars from 47-62. It looks the same EXCEPT the casting for the brake arm pivot. It is not there, so buyer beware. these do not work, as you can not hook up the pedal. Thanks so much for the imput and info.  By the way, I did buy a rebuild kit off ebay a few weeks ago, but I was really curious as to the diffference.

Well, I am being picky, but the #2796 fits Studebaker cars from 47 to 60 and then Hawks 61 & 62. - 61 and later Larks had MCs on the firewall (hanging pedals) so they had a completely different MC. #2796 was used on probably all Jeep vehicles from 1946 to around 1961. It was even used on the FC series mounted up under the dash. Let me tell you that it is hard to replace the MC on the FC series and not any fun to check & fill the fluid level.

I really believe that the Lockheed-Wagneer #2796 is not an exact replacement for the original HJ MC. I think the original MC was mostly the same except the filler hole was very small - a 3/4 pipe plug instead of the larger cap of that the #2796.

Just a quick note, the master cylinder used on 49-51 Fords and 51-55 Kaisers is #14911.  The newer replacement # 36313 is close, but needs bushings in the pivot hole to make up for a difference in size.

I believe HJ ETX is correct about those original HJ master cylinders. The illustration in the HJ parts book is consistent with that, even though it is a hand drawn rendering. I had to fill the cylinder in Edgar Kaiser's Henry J last summer it has the cap as HJ ETX describes.

Your comment about 14911 vs 36313 is apt. The 36313 unit I have is a replacement my brother bought to replace a correct unit I used to fix his 52 Manhattan. It didn't have the bushing and I wasn't happy because it wasn't EXACTLY the same as what I gave him.

49-51 Fords are the classic "shoebox" style (I have no idea where they got that name from since the 53-54 Fords are more squared off). However, 52/53 Fords are the same chassis with new styling and although a 54 Ford looks much the same as a 53, the flathead V8 was replaced with the Y-block OHV V8 and the suspension was completely revised with bigger A-arms, ball-joints, and swinging pedals. So 52-53 Ford, new body, old chassis and 54 Ford, old body new chassis. The MC application should be 49-53 Ford, not just 49-51.

Hi the Ford -52 53 54.... MC will not fit Kaiser 51-55 I know I have a -52 Ford(very ugly car)and a 53 Kaiser(just love those lines).
