Interior Paint on '51 Henry Js with all vinyl interior

Starting a new thread on this as I found some of my pictures.  The first time I'd encountered this was on a '51 J in a small town in MO. It had all brown pleated vinyl and the column and molding were satin blue just like the rest of the car.  I remember having a conversation with long time KFOC member John Beck, who seemed to really know the Js well, and he commented that some were like that - again, his own observation. It wasn't until years later when I noticed the correlation regarding that on the all vinyl upholstered 1951 cars I encountered.
I looked at yellow '51 with all brown vinyl in it in western MN in the late 90s. See pic, it's got the color coordinated column and molding -

Further evidence that the colored column is factory (evidence mind you, not proof) is the fact that the car had factory signal lights. I didn't snag a picture from that side ( I snagged these from a video I took) but the signal light kit is metallic gray. I would have to ask, if the column and molding had been painted afterwards, why didn't the signal light kit get painted too? Of course, there's no way of knowing when the signal lights were installed so nothing conclusive.

Here's one that was for sale in Coon Rapids, MN 10 years ago. I didn't get any photos of the outside as it was packed in a garage but see the column and molding colors match the car -

I've attached the data tags separately as well as you can't really read them here but if you save or open the attachments you may be able to enlarge them and read the numbers.

I can't find the pictures I have of interior of Steve Carey's all vinyl J, but it's the same way.
Again, no factory documentation but it is a very high correlation of all-vinyl upholstered cars with matching column trim. I'd say it was very likely that's how many, if not most, all-vinyl '51 Js were originally.

The gray used on HJ cars was called Mariner Gray.

To add to the mix, here's an interior shot of a 12K original mile 53 Allstate I cleaned up a few years ago. It was in storage since the early 60s...I installed a new mat and gave the seat covers a bath. Note the steering column color, it's darker than the dash paint, which is the same Mariner Gray as the exterior.

Joe, was the interior paint called "Mariner Gray?"   I know mariner gray is a light, non-metallic gray whereas the HJ interior is a metallic gray and quite a bit darker.

And Jim B, I don't remember if you knew but my dad once owned that "Last Onslaught" car. He bought it here in Mpls from John Haller who had gotten it from Neil Greener.  A fine example, I remember it has those metal/chrome Kaiser knobs on the radio. Very clean original upholstery in when he had it.  And Drew, your upholstery looks just like that one.  Nice looking car you have.  I've only seen that metallic brown color on the column and molding on '51 Js.  I don't know if it was used on the later cars or not but if it was, I've never seen one.

Fid, I think the steering column and trim in the Allstate is Ranger Gray metallic.

That makes sense joe... I forgot to click the links in your post after I read it. The gray on your Allstate sure looks the same as that in my cars. I'll have to pull my paint chip list out and look at ranger gray. I think I have it.

Because of color fade, exposure to light and elements over the years and the typical slight shift in color when copied or scanned, pictures of paint charts are not reliable for showing colors.

If you know your car color, PPG jobbers can make the color (if it's in their Color Library) using current mix & tint colors.  There is no charge to the jobber for getting the mix info from the Color Library but the information is not supposed to be given out to customers.

  I bought a 51 J when it was 2 years old. It had not been tampered with. The color was satin blue and all the metal inside was satin blue. The door panels and the ends of the seats were the alligator looking material. The main part of the seats were what looked like plastic thread woven into a checkerboard pattern. The floor mats were rubber. The steering wheel was off white. It was a 6 cyl 3 spd. Loved that little car, many memories. ( I was 18 yrs old.)
