fuel guage sending unit

'53 Kaiser:   There is a sending unit for Fords sold by Mac Auto parts P/N 99A9275 which is supposed to also work in Kaisers.   It's for both 6 and 12 volt systems.  The unit has a range of 15 ohms, full, to 100 ohms empty.  This is listed in Kaiser parts exchange catalog. 
 I put it on and full reads 1/2 tank so there must be an ohm mismatch.   I think Kaiser, King-Sealy, guage goes from 12 to 50 for full and empty.  Not sure but there is a problem.   Have any of you also bought this unit and had same problem?    If so, have you found out what size resister is needed to correct this discrepancy?
Mac's tells me that I can put a resister in series to adapt their sender unit to Kaiser.   thanks,  Jim O'Rourke  707/2173374

The Kaiser unit goes from 71 ohms empty to 10 full. so the Ford gauge will read low across the range There is no way to improve this with a resistor, as this would increase the resistance when you need to decrease it. It is a bit surprising that it is that far off on top- 12 isn't far from 10. It  would tell you that it is empty before it was, which isn't that bad  a thing. You might check to see if there is a bit of extra resistance in the circuit somewhere, as in a slightly corroded connection or the instrument voltage regulator voltage being low.

The original units often can be refurbished. Loosen the nut on the connection end and inject WD 40. Have made that work long term a couple of times.

Thanks for clarifying about the resister.  I'll have to deal with readings of old gauge for now.    I've been trying to locate the voltage regulator for gauges with no luck.   Spoke to Larry Barker several days ago and no response.  thanks
