oil filter seal
« on: April 21, 2014, 11:12:28 AM »
On my '51 Kaiser I have a black oil filter canister and the cap has 6 ridges on top. I use a NAPA
Gold 1080 oil filter that comes with  a seal used between the cap and canister. The problem is
that I have a difficult time getting the seal to not leak when the oil gets warm. The seal does
not seat tightly in the cap, so I glue it to the cap. I wondering if this is the wrong filter and seal?
What about NAPA 1010 or 3209 listed in the Parts Interchange List?

The NAPA 1010 and 1080 use the same seal. Can you post a pic of your filter canister?

You may have to replace the cap.  I had a similar problem some years ago with my 1951 Frazer and after I did that, I was able to use the same rubber seal and had a tight fit.

That looks like a Purolator unit...also used on the HJ cars. I checked the NOS unit I have and the gasket used with a NAPA 1080 filter fits.

The original filter used in these units was a Purolator P70FF which crosses to a NAPA 1080.

Sounds like you may, indeed have a warped lid or housing.

The spring inside the oil filter cap has a wide end and a narrow end. Does it matter which way
the ends go in?

I put a listing in the part wanted section today for the canister and Custom replied that he has
a Purolater filter canister for a 51 HJ available. Does anyone know if they are the same unit? My
unit takes a NAPA Gold 1080 filter. His picture sure looks like the same canister to me.

The unit that fits the HJ will work on the big Kaisers but for judging would not be correct.
