1961 Checker Supurba

The Superba was the non-taxi version. I believe the A11 was for taxi service. A rare car!

I owned two Checkers. One was a A12 Marathon (civilian) the other was a A11 Taxicab.

In 61 they were equipped with a genuine Continental 6 cyl. engine and Borg-Warner tranny.

Later on they switched for GM-Chevy powerplants.

Mines were 70's models and very easy to work on !!!

I traded the blue one for my Kaiser !

In 1968 my dad was looking to replace his tired 1960 Dodge Pioneer wagon and one of the cars he had his eyes on was an A12 Marathon. He had narrowed down his search to it and a Volvo 122. With three growing kids the Volvo was soon out of contention and he'd have bought the Checker except that my Mom wanted nothing to do with driving a taxi cab - even if it was a different color and with a much nicer interior. Instead he bought a bare-bones 1968 Dodge Dart. He must have made a good choice because he drove that car for 100K miles and I then put another 100K on it before trading it in (I got $105 for the car) on a 1971 Buick Riviera.

In high school, I had a friend that drove a Checker Marathon wagon that looked a lot like the pic below. Same color only someone had mounted a Mack bulldog on the hood. Great car never broke down. I never looked under the hood - maybe a 226 was there.
The larger Divco milk trucks of the late 1950's - early 1960's used a Continental 226 as well.

This checker was picking up fares at Cocoa Beach last year.
