Early owners manuals
« on: December 02, 2009, 05:37:03 PM »
I never paid much attention to the 1947-8 Kaiser and Frazer owners manuals because they all say first edition and look the same.  The first Frazer manual says Graham Paige Motors on the bottom of the cover and there are two variations of this one.  I assumed that the later ones were all the same but wondered if their was any differences between 1947 and 1948.  After looking at several Frazer manuals I discovered that there is a difference on page 22.  The early manual shows the tire size as 6:50 X 15 and tire pressure at 28 lbs.  The later manual shows tire size as 7:10 X 15 and tire pressure at 24 lbs.  I did not look for other differences and I have not checked Kaiser manuals but am sure they would have the same differences.  The Graham Paige manuals were apparently printed in large quantities as I have seen a few original 1947 cars that were not Graham Paige cars with the earlier manuals.  I need a Graham Paige manual for my Frazer if anyone has one that they would sell.

Check the inside back cover pictures showing the jack set up on the front bumper.  G-P Version #1 shows the car having two bumper guards; G-P version #2 shows four guards (one is barely visible because of camera position.  The Kaiser-Frazer Corporation version of the Frazer Owners Instruction Book shows the 4 bumper guards and the one that I have also shows that 7.10 x 15 tire size.  There could also be a fourth version...that one would have a Kaiser-Frazer Corporation cover but show 6.50 x 15 tire size which would have been used between the end of March/early April 1947 and the end of November 1947.  I base that on the following:

1.  a summary specifications document notorized on August 7 1947 listing the 6.50 size as correct
2.  Service Bulletin #30, dated 12/9/47 that advises dealers 1948 model year production began December 1, 1947 and that 1948 Frazer & Frazer Manhattan models would be equipped with 7.10 x 15 Goodyear Super Cushion tires; standard Frazers blackwall, Manhattans whitewalls.

1947 model year Frazers shipped out after 12/1/47 should have had the owners manual with 6.50 x 15 but who knows?

My Frazer owners manual has Kaiser-Frazer Corporation on the front cover - inside back cover shows 4 bumper guards - page 22 tire size is 6.50 X 15  -  on the Forward page, bottom right corner: No. 706656 First Edition

I have 2 of the Frazer books...the later Graham-Paige and the later Kaiser-Frazer version.  Both have the same part number and are listed as first edition.   Guess they never changed the introduction page between the 4 different versions.

I checked and have both editions of the Kaiser and Frazer manuals.  The early Graham Paige manual shows two bumper guards in front and the painted grill as on the prototype cars.  It is interesting that they printed at least six different manuals and never changed the part numbers.  I guess that they were too busy trying to get cars in production to be bothered with trivia.
