For years now (over 35 of them) I've used Coker Tires reproduction Firestone or B.F.Goodrich Silvertown bias ply 6.40 X 15 wide white walls on Old Toby's wheels. Both are acceptable for judging and I've generally gotten about 30,000 miles out of each set. These modern, repro tires are made to be more uv light resistant.
At one point, I put on a set of radials, Volkswagen sized but a bit smaller than 6.40's because there is no exact size crossover. Anything bigger rubs the tie rod ends. I got good service out of them until the steel belt delaminated in each tire, one by one. That will be my last set of radials for that car.
Like someone mentioned earlier, my car is not a long distance car any more and not a daily driver, so the radials are unnecessary.
When someone mentioned Coker Tires was a crap shoot - he was referring only to the Coker brand radials, not their reproduction tires. I've heard their radials were not so good, but absolutely no one who told me that had ever owned a set of them! Every one I know who actually owned them got good service out of them. I think their competition may have invented this urban legend.
