Darrin information...
« on: December 18, 2015, 12:57:34 PM »
Two questions to throw out to the seasoned owners...trying to be a good boy and do my homework first before I throw out the desperate "help" questions, so I have the "Manual 2000", and the "Darrin Parts Manual" on its way (I couldn't locate me dad's copy in the Bulletins and literature I do have)

1) What are any other 'must haves' for the Darrin restorer?(literature or otherwise)

2) What Borg Warner model transmission is under the Darrin?
I'm looking to get all I need before I pull it, but from the little research I've gotten to and limited info I currently have on hand; all I find is "three speed w/ OD." ...and it is a bit different from the other BWs we have laying around for donor parts.
Thank you in advance, and I look forward to the continued education!
Regards,
Noah

The transmission in Darrin is a T96 unit. It is the same as was used in the Henry Js.

There was a series of Kaiser-Willys service bulletins published for the Darrin and occasionally, a few surface on ebay. The Manual 2000 you mention is very helpful - I have one - and the parts book is a good source of diagrams as well.

You can check out a page I put together for the Darrin here -> http://www.kaiserfrazercars.com/darrinpg.htm

Thank you Sir, from a fellow Ohioan! That will definitely be part of my Christmas break reading.

ALL the known Kaiser-Willys Service Bulletins for the Darrin are scanned and will be part of KFOCI HANDBOOK Version 6.0.  The "big board" set up by engineering at the Jackson MI Darrin assembly line was previously scanned and is found in the Handbook's Version 5.0.  This documents when running changes were made to the car & what serial numbers were retrofitted with the changes after assembly.

To answer your specific question about differences, The Henry J trans has a solenoid sticking out from the trans.  The Darrin trans does not have the room in the tunnel for the overdrive solenoid, so they put a lever on it and the solenoid on the other side.  See the pictures.  They could have made a push-out like they did on the other side for the Governor.  Other than that I don't know if they are different with their gear ratios, anyone out there know???
