Transmission and Rear End Fluids
« on: December 26, 2015, 10:54:04 AM »
Hi All

Need to change the Transmission Fluid in the 53 Manhattan.  She has been sitting for 30 years and want to start fresh.  What is the recommended transmission fluid and is there a filter I should change?
Also better change rear end grease, what is recommend.

I'm traveling but I assume the service manual addresses both these projects.  I appreciate any shortcuts

Assuming the car has a hydramatic in it, you'll want to use Dexron-Mercon fluid. It's today's version of the old Type A fluid. There is a filter under the large pan, remove it and you'll see the filter. It's the reusable type so just clean it and the pan and reinstall.

There's also a drain plug on the converter. To access it, remove the inspection pan (the half-round cover that's behind the oil pan).

The rear end uses 90W gear lube.
