To help fredryck out, is there some adaptor or voltage stepdown, or something that we use to start the 226 using 12v?  I know many cars I have seen have been coverted to 12 volt systems.  Light bulbs seem to be the main thing to change of course.  Sorry fredryck, but I only have personal experiance with the 6V system.  We can even get new replacement parts here for the regulators, generators,  and starters with no trouble.  I will continue to try to find some help for you, until someone more knowledgeable than I comes along!

If you can rebuild your 6 V starter it will work fine with 12 V. You will have to change out bulbs etc.

Since the car is a standard shift, the starter is the same as 1949-50 KF. It would be an Autolite MAW4054. I know I don't have a spare to sell. Anyone else?

A starter for your car is currently listed on ebay.

I wonder what it would cost to ship a starter to France? It would be worthwhile to join the KFOCI if you are not already a member. You will then have access to names and addresses of members in Europe who may be able to help you with locating a starter. I suspect the savings in shipping from USA would pay for at least a year's membership.
