49 Kaiser will not start
« on: March 19, 2016, 05:59:04 PM »
I have a 49 Kaiser and I can't get it to start.  I have gas in the fuel filter between the tank and pump and when I break the gas line at the carburetor and spin it over it pumps gas.  I took out the screen filter right where the line goes into the carburetor and sprayed it with cleaner and re installed but still it will not crank.  If I pour gas into the carburetor or spray either into it it will hit and run.  The car has sat up a little but had ethanol free gas in it.

Any suggestions?

While cranking the engine, have someone tap on the carb body near where the float is with the handle end of a screwdriver. It's heavy enough to cause some vibration in the carb but not heavy enough to cause the housing to break.

My HJ does this occasionally and the screwdriver trick works.

Right it sounds like a stuck float/needle or just the float, easy fix get carburetor cleaner (spray can), 1st try taking off fuel line at carburetor, try spraying into hole if this doesn't work carefully remove carb. top, you may need a new gasket for this, after float chamber is exposed use the cleaner to free and clean the needle under the float. I would give you a caution using "starting fluid" too much can cause engine damage. I found adding sta-bilt to fuel is helpful in preventing this type of problem and will keep fuel fresh for several years, I use it in every gasoline burning item that I own.

A carburetor rebuild kit would provide a new "needle and seat" ( the part that is sticking shut) it should also include a new gasket.

Thanks. I'll try it and see what happens. I need to drive it more. It normally starts right up.

That did the trick.  Took the gas line off and sprayed carb cleaner in it, reattached, pulled the choke and it started right up.  Probably drain the gas and put fresh gas in it.  Just letting it run right now.  Thanks for the help.
