CARBURETOR LEAKING

I have 2 Carter YF's, each on 161 engines.

Both have been rebuilt a few years ago.
Both are on fuel lines that have an inline filter.
Both cars run fine.

Both experience the same problem every once in awhile, either at startup or midway on a ride after a stop.

And that is...fuel bowl fills up and overflows onto engine.

I remedy it with a light tap on the front side of the bowl with a small hammer.

I have been inside both carbs--clean, no sediment or varnish on float contact points.

I'm stumped!!

Suggestions???

Were they rebuilt using the new style needle and seat? If so, swap back to the old set. I did and it ended the same problem I had. Others I've spoken to have done the same.

Yep new needle and seat.

What difference is there from the old to the new that causes the problem?

Here's a pic of the two side by side. The older version has a more pronounced point while the new Daytona Parts product uses a blunt ended needle with a reconfigured seat. The new version doesn't seal as well and allows fuel to run by, loading up the carb bowl.

As I mentioned, I swapped the old units back in and it ended the problem.

And for the armchair mechanics, yes, I did reset the float height based on the new design and it did not help. I even replaced the float thinking I'd done something to it - but to no avail. The only fix for me was to reuse the old needle and seat.

Check your float I had one that would get a little fuel in it and would cause this problem took me forever to figure it out cause it wasn't completly sunk......and try Chicago carberator......that's where I got my kit everything worked fine except for the base gasket........
