Title: 1949 Kaiser Engine Install
Post by: JoeKeys2010 on February 11, 2017, 10:11:53 PM
Getting ready to drop an engine into my Kaiser. It's been out of commission for about a year now. I'm anxious to hear it crank again.

I hear you on that!
Mine is stripped down & heading to the machine shop soon, hoping to try it out this summer.

If all goes as planned I'll pick the new motor on Thursday and start putting it back in over the weekend.

Picked up the motor today in Thomasville Alabama. On my way to Texas to clean it up and drop it in.

Getting ready to drop in the rebuilt drive train in to my 1949 Kaiser.  Stripped the block and painted it yesterday.  I've got to trim out the accessories, clean the engine compartment and then it will be ready to drop in.  Bought new mounts as well.  Anxious to get the car running again.

So I's still detailing out the motor before dropping it in.  I have a question on oil lines and gas/vacuum lines.  Are they supposed to be painted or left as bare steel?

On all the black components, fan, upper pulley, strap for oil filter and lid for oil filter, oil cap and coil strap I have walnut shelled blasted and will apply a DTM epoxy (a railcar paint that is somewhere between flat and gloss).

I'd like to get the old style radiator hose clamps.  Does anyone have a good source?

All oil, vacuum and fuel lines should be natural color. They were not painted engine green. The same holds true for the heater tube and adapter block that mounts to the water pump.

And the brass fittings on the side of the motor?  Are they left natural color?

Oil filter kits were installed by the dealer so the brass fittings would be natural color.

Hopefully I only get one shot at dressing up the engine compartment while the engine is out.  I have a 1949 Kaiser Deluxe.  Please see the attached photo of the fire wall.  I have four questions concerning what color things are supposed to be.  If someone with knowledge of this could provide me with some answers I'd appreciate it.  Everything that is black will get repainted black.

1. Natural
2. Gloss black
3. Body color - steering column, shift linkage is natural
4. Natural - hinges and springs

Blasted and respected the engine compartment and all black components of the engine. Waiting for everything to dry before unmasking. Will post pictures tomorrow.

Update - for #3 above (the steering column), it should be painted the same color as the interior column cover which is usually the same color as the dash.

Here are some photos of the driver side and from of the motor. Does anyone see something I missed or painted the wrong color?  Please don't be bashful.

I hear you but while the motor is out I'd like to get it as right as possible.

Are these supposed to be painted?

I don't know the answer to your latest question Joe, but I will comment that it looks great!  Too bad you're going to have to start it up and get it dirty someday!  Of course that just means it's being driven and that's what it was built for. Looking good indeed.

I think the engine looks great! If you're after authenticity, here's what I see:

- The fan bolts, coil nuts and starter cable mount nuts and washers should all be natural. Same for the bolts that secure the starter to the block.
- The clamp that holds the water distribution tube to the head should be gloss black.
- The upper generator bracket (I didn't see it in the picture) should be block color. Same for the bolt that holds it to the water pump.
- The distributor adapter (the part that mounts to the block) is supposed to be painted block color according to factory photos. I've seen original cars with it in natural color so the decision is yours.

I like your work !

A little confused on the manifolds.  Painted the intake and fasteners the color of the engine.  Did not paint the exhaust.  The Service Manual has a picture of the manifolds and both appear to be unpainted.  Anyone have a comment of the color of manifolds?

The intake and exhaust were installed after the engine was painted but the intake is painted engine color. The intake nuts and spacers should be natural color.

The exhaust manifold is not painted but a lot of folks paint theirs a heat resistant silver/gray.

The motor is in the car!!  Got to hook everything back up but the motor is in. I'm afraid I messed up the distributor with the chain, careless on my part.
