Title: HJ radio
Post by: Henry's HenryJs on April 18, 2017, 11:49:43 AM
The radio in my 51 lights up but no sound whatsoever comes out. Is the speaker inside the radio? What help can you offer? Henry

There were two types of factory issue radios used in the Henry J. The speaker is separate in both types, it is not part of the radio. It is likely not the problem.
Some Henry Js had the kit, part number 100219, which allowed dealers to install the '47/'48 KF radios in the Henry J:

Installed it looks like this:

The "true" Henry J radio is KF Part number 100205 and looks like this:

In either case, I can just about gaurantee that the speaker is not the problem.

Where are you. I also have a radio out of my other 51, should hook it up and see if it works.

Fid, How about a radio like the bottom one, that is fine volume wise then all of a sudden the volume drops then rises again??  Easy fix or is it off MN?

Hmmm, I have not seen that problem before.  Check all of the grounds and the antenna and make sure all connections are good, clean and tight.
If that doesn't do it, I'd have to look at it.
It could be a bad tube.  If you're comfortable replacing tubes yourself, they're all available (except the 0Z4) on ebay pretty cheap.
I can make a solid state replacement for the 0Z4.  Retubing it may take care of that issue.
If not, let me know and I'd be happy to look at it.

Would the fact that my car has had the battery changed over neg ground be a reason the radio does not work?

The only way it would is if it had the original vibrator replaced with a solid state replacement vibrator. Those are polarized and must have the correct ground.  If it still has the original, contact type vibrator it won't make any difference.
