Title: WANTED - Running 161 f-head six
Post by: joefrazer on May 27, 2017, 10:14:20 AM
I'm looking for a running 161 f-head six cylinder engine. After sitting for nearly 40 years, mine would not start - just backfire. I checked compression and it's low in four of the six. So, I pulled the head and found a mess. So, I'm in the market for a running engine.

Gotta be someone out there turning their Willys into a hot rod!

I saw that one. The combination of distance and that it hasn't been run in many years took it off my list. Thanks for pointing it out though!

Thanks for the follow up but I decided to have my engine rebuilt. It should be done in a few weeks. I’m getting excited....finally get the Darrin back on the road some 44 years after it was parked.

I went with Egge, everything good except for stainless valves had stems 50 thousandths longer than originals. Required removing after installation to machine off the 50 for proper adjustment. Also had rocker assembly rebuilt by Egge, discovered after the fact it was farmed out to Rocker Arms Unlimited (very nice work), likely with a nice up-charge to me by Egge.
All journals but cam machined ten thousandths.
Not thrilled with everything in the supplied Best Gasket brand rebuild set, addressed in another thread.

I used Egge for my rebuild. The only machine work required on my engine was to the block due to minor scoring that occurred when a couple of the pistons calved off small chunks, no doubt due to backfires when the previous owner tried to start the car using ether. The cam and crank only needed polished.
