Title: Darrin Engine Valve Cover bolt
Post by: warren on September 11, 2017, 08:03:05 PM
This is what was on my Darrin Motor holding the valve cover on.  Has anyone seen this configuration, most of the pictures I have found have a flat washer and a lock nut.  Does anyone know anything about this type?
Thanks

Terry,
What do you mean, yes, are they correct on a Darrin? what type of seal do they use. Who is Jerry Rigge?

There should be a threaded stud in place that accepts a nut and washer. I'll take a picture of mine when I get to the shop later and post it.

Here's a picture of the stud and nut. The nut is 5/16x24.

You have to watch out for that Jerry Rigge!  I think that Terry got a lot of us with that one!

I recognized the humor but the correct phrase is jury rigged. Jury rigging is the use of makeshift repairs or temporary contrivances, made with only the tools and materials that happen to be on hand, originally in a nautical context. On square-rigged sailing ships, a jury rig is a replacement mast and yards (a yard is a spar to which a sail is attached) improvised in case of damage or loss of the original mast. See Wikipedia Steve

WRONG!!!!

It is "Jerry Rigged", according to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, i.e., jerry–rigged /ˈʤeriˌrɪgd/  adjective

It was a joke in good humor and I don't mind being caught off guard.

The concern I have now is that it appears the hole in the valve cover is over-sized and I need to weld it up and refinish the to a more factory look.

just jerry rigg it with a rubber washer large enough  to cover the hole, as in "KISS"
do that for both sides and no one will know except those reading this thread

Your rocker stud hole looks pretty darn close to right to me. Stick a caliper in it and see what you've got. You can also check it with one of your new rubber seals.

I think the Darrin has the same stud/nut/washer set-up as the Aero. There is a stud & nut pic posted that is correct, but the rubber grommet/washer with the metal washer impregnated is unobtainium. I have found a great replacement for it, although it includes some stainless steel dress-up. Go to a Nissan Dealership and order part number 16568-77A10. You will find this a good, but non-stock substitute.

I checked the hole in the valve cover and it looks to be about 5/8, and is a great fit for the seals you sent.
