Title: '54 Kaiser Fuel Pump needed, '51 Starter, Heater valve
Post by: Cortes121 on May 31, 2010, 01:15:12 PM
Hello, I am currently restoring a 54 Manhattan 226 Engine and the fuel pump is broken. I need the fuel pump set up for the vaccum line. Any condition considered.

I am also in need of a working Starter for a '51 Kaiser Deluxe, and a heater valve for that same vehicle.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cortes - You only need a dual diaphragm fuel pump if you have vacuum wipers. All US production 54 Manhattans had electric wipers - which is a good thing as Martha Stewart would say.

Also, unless you are missing the heater valve, a leaking heater valve can be rebuilt - 1 time. But unless you are building a show car, you can use a manual shutoff valve either as an inline unit or a fitting on the cylinder head.

I m definately going  to gove those two numbers a call, thank you very much!

Btw, HJ-ETEX, The vaccum line is for the supercharger... are you saying its not needed?

I am missing the heater valve entirely. I would accept any replacement, doesn't need to be show quality, just as long as it fits correctly. One of the last owners really messed with the setup.

I think I saw  a heater valve on ebay today.  Check the part number, it might work for you.

I thought the fitting/line on the top of the 54 SC fuel pump provided air boost to the SC, not vacuum, but I could be wrong.   ???

Cortes - When you said you needed a fuel pump with a vacuum line, I thought you wanted a pump that ran vacuum wipers. Well, what you are are talking about isn't a vacuum line, it is a pressure line. On a SC vehicle like a Kaiser or Studebaker, the carb is in pressurized box. When the SC unit provides boost (even though it is less than 3 psi), it can actually squeeze gas back through the carb and fuel pump and into the tank. So there is a line from the carb box to the top of the fuel pump so the top side of the diaphragm in the fuel pump always has the same pressure as the carb box. Whether you can find it or not, the fuel pump casting on all non SC engines has a pin hole so the top side of the diaphragm is at atmospheric pressure.
Well, I have seen fuel pumps that had cast bosses that were not drilled or tapped. You could try drilling and tapping a regular fuel pump but you would also have to plug the regular vent hole.
Most owners have a known SC fuel rebuilt by some one like Kanter.

Heater Valves: Many cars in the 40's and 50's used RANCO valves. Most tend to look the same, but there are a lot of subtle differences. The best solution is to take a valve off of a similar year model of car and repair it.

HJ - I see. I'm still young and have a lot to learn, and I appreciate all the info you guys have taken the time to give me. I wouldn't mind tapping so much, I just would like a correct item to ensure everything runs smoothly. The pump as it stands is fairly ruined, all in thanks to me. It was working fine and I cracked the damn casing in two when I was pulling the engine.

The number for heater valve repair, is that a part or kit?

Napa part number 660-1000 is a repair kit which consists of one item for the 51-55 heater control valve.
