Title: Source or codes for the correct dark green for the engine
Post by: 52 Muntz on July 04, 2018, 09:54:06 PM
My engine rebuild is crawling along. Does anyone have the color codes for/ or a source to buy the correct dark green for the Darrin engine. Thanks.

I used to work for a subsidiary of Sherwin Williams as a paint shader and dug thru their older files and found that in the Dimension line of automotive paints, Olive Green Mica is a near perfect match. I had them add a small amount of black to the mix to bring the color down slightly as the standard mix seemed a bit too bright to me. The end result matches the paint that one of our club members used to supply in pint cans for the 51-53, Henry J and Darrin engines.

And yes, the paint that Phil Hirsch claims is correct for the Darrin is not. His paint is a match to the 49-50 Kaisers and Frazers using the 2 bbl carburetor equipped engines.

Any update on the correct green? What about other greens used on car engines?

I had a special mix created at Sherwin Williams that looks correct on the engine. This mix is for their Olive Green Mica in the Dimension product. No hardener is needed, it'll take a day or so but will dry nicely. It's been on my Darrin engine for a few months now and no peeling. Just make sure your engine is clean - no oil or grease.

DM628 - 265g
DM500 strong black 42.1g
DM504 Yellow Green - 21.1g
PT24 - Fine Green 8.7g
DM540 - Medium Large Metallic - 7.6g
DM528 - Ferrite - 4.2g
DM535 - Bright Medium Metallic - 2.7g
DM625 - Mica Metallic Balancing Clear - 70.6g
I had a few extra grams of strong black added because I thought the stock mix was a bit too green. The end result is a mix that matches the original paint on the bell housing.
