Title: Recently deceased member
Post by: Fid on October 29, 2018, 10:00:50 PM
In the latest bulletin there was an "In Memoriam" for John Beck of Louisville, Ky.  I was just wondering if anyone on here knew him?  My dad sold him a very nice '53 Henry J Corsair Deluxe (see picture... oh and don't let the smoke fool you, it was due to changing the oil with a different type, it stopped shortly thereafter) back in the early '70s.  Dad spotted the car on a used car lot in Millard, NE but could not afford to buy it. He made a deal with the dealer but put the car up for sale as he knew he couldn't really afford it. He advertised it in the bulletin and John called and wanted it right away. He flew to Omaha to pick it up and drove it back to Louisville.  He was quite pleased with the car and we saw him at all the HOA and Midwest Division meets throughout the rest of the 1970s. He had a gray '53 Henry J with a Chevy 283 in it. I remember it had the metric speedometer (went to 160 Kilometers) in it. He drove that car to all of the meets but always said he had  7 or so very nice Js at home that he didn't take out to meets.  When I got back into the hobby again around 2000, I never saw nor heard from  him again despite his name still being in the roster. I always wondered what happened to him.  He was quite an interesting fellow as I recall.

That I don't know.  I never heard anyone call him anything other than John.

This is an article from a long ago quarterly on installing a 283 in a Henry J by Douglas Beck...coincidence?. The part about converting the 9' Henry J brakes to 11" AMC brakes works and has been done several times to my knowledge … Mac's "Blue Jay" for one.

I remember that article too Jim.  Different guy for sure.  Last name is a coincidence.

I just looked at this obit again and there is a video at the bottom. I viewed the video and there are some shots of him at one or two KFOC meets. They looked recent.
