what is the approx. rpm for the kaiser 226 motor driving at about 60 to 65? cruising not max.
-
It depends on the rear end ratio and whether or not you have overdrive. It can make a big difference.

I would like to be at 2500 to 3000 RPM at those speeds. Hydramatic with a 3.08 rear axle and 710 x 15 tires are what my 51 Frazer Manhattan has. 4.11 rear axle in overdrive with 710 x 15 tires would put you in the 2500 RPM range, and a 3.54 in overdrive with 710 x 15 tires would put you in the 2000 RPM range. If you do not engage or use overdrive, increase the engine RPM by 40% approximately. Almost 3500 RPM for the 4.11's and about 2800 RPM for the 3.54 axle.

thankyou for the input appreciate the help

My '51 had a 3 speed with OD and would scream at 65 MPH. It sounded normal at 56-60 MPH, while my Dad's '53 with auto would cruise all day at 65 and get 25-27 MPG. I liked the pep of my '51, but not for highway cruising. I wonder what the '51 would have been like with the gears from a auto rear end. Anyone tried that ?

I went the other route...I installed OD in my 50K Traveler but left the non-OD rear end in place. I won't win a race off the line but it cruises all day at 70 mph at comfortable rpms and delivers over 20 mpg.

What was the rear end ration in your non OD Kaiser ? I wonder how that compares to the ratio in the automatics of the '53's.
