1. Suggestion on strongest/best 6V battery for six cylinder '53?
2. Suggestion on best battery tender? Evidently the one I was using failed to automatically switch to 6V and fried my 4 month old Battery Source battery.

I have used BATTERY TENDERS on my cars and tractors for years--some batteries have lasted 10 years. I get 6v batteries from TSC--they are built to handle the rough rides in tractors

I am using this charger/maintainer on my '53 HJ. So far so good, but haven't gone through the winter yet.

Harbor Freight still lists a 6v/12v trickle charger with a manual switch between 6 and 12. I have one for my Henry J. Terry is right about TSC. One finally opened up not far from where we live and the 6 volt battery with 1 year warranty is a bit less (cost wise) than the Duracell that Batteries Plus offers.

I'm a big fan of AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries because the self discharge rate is a fraction of a percent per month, compared to flooded cell type which can self discharge up to 7 percent a month. Optima makes a very good one, I have no opinion on the "vintage look" AGM specialty batteries.
If you're going to use a battery tender, that's not much of an issue. Here's a link to one I use from time to time through the winter to top up various batteries that seems to work very well.

TSC for me as well...working in a parts store since 1990....I’ll leave you with a game to try before you buy...parts stores change suppliers often. Before you buy a battery, look at the sticker on the front. When suppliers change, they use up the previous stock and many times slap their sticker over the previous. Nonchalantly try and peel a corner and reveal what name you are getting. When playing with stock my high score was 3 other (different)name brand stickers under the outer most.:-)
Tenders are great, but I’ve had more fail than still work. Check them often! A load tester is your friend!

TY for leads. Have had two batterys eaten by failed chargers. Casual research reveals this is not uncommon for 12V/6V chargers failing to auto switch to 6V

That's why I got one with a manual switch

Just checked my charger. It defaults to 12volts when unplugged and plugged back in. You can't switch to 6volts w/o disconnecting the battery. I will have to be sure to check the charger if I ever have a power outage.
