Title: Photo needed of defroster vent grills
Post by: 324darrin on January 18, 2020, 02:51:16 AM
Would one of you kind gentleman post a photograph of a defroster vent cover. And possibly dimensions.  Sometime in the Early 60s the interior was redone in tuck and roll and they thought it was a good idea to smooth up the dash by removing the mirror and the defroster vents. I guess they figured they didn’t need defrosters in Southern California but here in Oregon they’d be kind of nice. Thank you, Steve

Here are the pictures you want.  If you need what the underside looks like, just let me know.  They are made of brass and are heavy.
If you need any other picture, let me know.

These are from my Darrin that is going back together right now.  The Dash is at the upholsterer now.  The window will be put together nest week.  The body will be going on the frame within the next month.   I will take pictures during the process and submit them.

Is you car together?  Pictures??

Thank you so much for all those different shots. That really answered a lot of questions for me. My car is more or less in one piece the doors are off at the moment waiting for some wiring to be finished because it’s a lot easier to access under the dash with those things off. Tackling one little project at a time. Hoping to have It roar worthy  by the time the pacific northwest regional meet comes around. Don’t have any after photos but here’s a before and during photo.Steve

Using your photos as a guide, I was able to manufacture this piece out of quarter inch aluminum plate. And I was able to use your photographs to identify  A defroster Plenum that I had in a box and it turned out to be a factory unit. So at least I will have one complete assembly on the driver side and that’ll get me by for a while. Thanks again, Steve

pjkaiser,  you indicated in a previous post that there was a brass plate of some kind that goes between the Plenum and the dash? If it’s not too much trouble can you get me a photo of that so I can see how it positions in there. Otherwise I was thinking of making a spacer out of hardwood. Thanks, Steve

Here are the pictures of the back of the vent.   This vent is made from brass and is heavy.

Do you have the vent attachments (the black pieces in the other pictures)??

I should have sent these as well, I didn't realize you would make them.  What you made looks good, though.

I see now. The brass parts (appear to be plated)that go under the dash have the throats angled to direct air closer to the base of the windshield. My home made parts will not be that sophisticated. Unless there are parts available, I’ll have to make do. Thanks for all your support. Steve

Correct, the windshield posts and these vents are chrome plated brass.   I don't know where you might find a set.   Good luck finding a pair!

At first I thought my leftover Aero plenums might be a match but they have an angle where the Darrin type looks straight. I suspect there's a possibility the Darrin defroster plenum may have been adapted from another KF model. Something that might be worth a look.
