Title: Unitogs - Service Dept Uniforms
Post by: pnw_oldmags on December 27, 2010, 03:14:09 PM
Got these overalls for Christmas.  Can't wait to wear them to a KF Event.  Need to sew on the Kaiser Frazer Approved Service patch ... take about 4 inches out of the legs and I will be ready.

Here is some literature about the Unitogs Garments

Love the original price!!

Better change the name also as "My Name is Not CHUCK!!"

There was a second version of the Unitog short catalog that came out around 1950-51 or thereabouts.  I have the two tone blue mechanics version that belonged to my father (covered over the old Pontiac patch with a KF).  What you need to find is the larger K-F patch for the back.  I've only seen two of those and they were on coveralls kept by their original user (Ron Adams had his fathers, the other was on a shop manager outfit that belonged to the service manager of the K-F dealer in Columbia Springs MO; that was 20 years ago when I was in MO for a GM meeting that tied in with a KFOCI meet out that way).

Jack - I have the 2 inch patch that the brochure shows for above the chest pocket.  Years ago I purchased a larger service patch from Fred Walker.  It is between 6 and 7 inches diameter.  Would that patch be appropriate for the back??  Seems bulky to be true worn there.

I have a round cloth patch that is twelve inches in diameter.  A thin red border on blue background with gold KF emblem.  I'm not sure where it was used.  There is also a tan hat with a black hard plastic visor and two inch round Kaiser Frazer Appproved Service patch on the front of the cap that was probably worn with the uniform.  The hat was made by Penn Garment Co.  "Manufacturers of Uniforms and Uniform Caps, Williamsport PA." is printed on the underside of the cap.  My Unitog folder illustrates four other different styles of service caps and hats.  I have at least two other caps that were made by K-F dealers for their service people.  Fun stuff!

The Unitog brochure pictured at the link is the NEWER of the two versions that I know of.  The earlier version does not show an automobile on its cover.  My coveralls are of the Lot 432 type (as shown in the 1948 brochure).

I know there were two sizes of patches, but I am not sure on the dimensions for the larger size.  The Unitog materials only refers to the smaller patch for above the front shirt pocket area;  these were offered free (one per garmet ordered, additional "at slight extra cost").
