Title: Battery ground location.
Post by: boatingbill on October 15, 2011, 05:17:41 PM
On my '51 Kaiser the ground (+) braided strap is bolted to the left front engine mount bolt. I not sure this is correct and as I am replacing all the cables, can anyone verify this? Thanks.

It originally attached to a hole in the front engine plate.

I guess my question really is to know what is the correct location for the ground (+) strap?

Ah  yes, they are not the same thing. Sorry about that. I don't have an answer on that one so if anyone who does reads this, please chime in.

The location on the front engine mount bolt is the same place I've seen it on other Kaisers.  You need to make sure that the nut and bolt down there are cleaned up.  A wash of baking soda and water followed up by a good drying with a cloth should get rid of some of the corrosion.

The small strap...one end mounts in a hole on the front engine plate...it shares the nut and bolt with the positive battery cable. The other end mounts to the frame. There's a hole in it very near the engine mount that takes a self tapping bolt and lock washer.

I heard there was an advantage to grounding to the starter as well.   This makes the starter spin better and quicker starts.   I have the braided cable mounted on the front of the generator bracket on the engine and am planning on running another cable from there to the starter.   Maybe this will improve the starting.   Any thoughts?
