Title: HJ RADIO ANTENNA
Post by: Terry T on January 07, 2012, 06:56:23 PM
What is proper location for the antenna?
I have seen pics of it mounted on both sides.

I once heard, but I don't remember where, and have no documentation, that if it was factory installed the antenna was on the passenger side and if it was dealer installed it was on the driver's side.  Here's the instalation instructions:

http://home.comcast.net/~ljfid/HJAntenna.pdf

It appears in the drawings that it is intended to be installed on the driver's side.  The early style radio, the 100219 kit, advises that the antenna instructions are seperate and are included with the antenna. Those same instructions caution the installer to "Dress the antenna lead in cable up and over the instrument panel..." indicating that the antenna is to be installed on the driver's side.
Hope this helps!

Fid's information, interestingly enough match (location) with the Kaiser and Frazer antennas 200003 and 200004 (standard length and longer length versions).   The illustration shows the "factory" antenna type.  There are pictures of K-F products with antennas installed on the SIDE of the fender like Willys Station Wagons of the late 1940's.  Some dealers used non-factory assemblies so the antennas came up anywhere.

Based on the assembly instruction sheet, factory installs would be on the left side because that's what their instructions say.  However, I would guess that running the antenna wire would be easier off the right side because you would not have to navigate the mass of wiring and the speedo cable run that you find on the left side behind the dash.

The claim back in the day was put it on the driver side and it was farther away from power lines and possible electrical interference. Who knows.
