Title: K-F Training Film Strips
Post by: pnw_oldmags on November 12, 2012, 07:34:03 PM
K-F Dealerships had training supplied to them on Magnavox Illustravox FilmStrip Players.  These players played 16" transcription style records.  Still working on getting the audio off of the records ... but if you would like to view a work in progress here is the 109 scanned images from "The Final Link" - Vol 48 Nbr 01
http://circlekf.com/kflit/kfsourcepageresults.php?pub=KF&typ=FS&nbr=4801&seq=&pag=001&Submit=Search (http://circlekf.com/kflit/kfsourcepageresults.php?pub=KF&typ=FS&nbr=4801&seq=&pag=001&Submit=Search)
I have the images in a movie version once the audio is ready to match to it.
I really want to hear what is being said.

Jim,

I will see about getting you the one I have next trip down to the house in KY.   It was used for Federal-Mogul film strips on parts department set-up and a 1955 Hudson Motors strip for the 1955 Hudson Rambler.  Sorry, no scripts or records on any of these.

Jack, I "won" a second Illustravox of off eBay last week.  Let me test that one before you ship me yours.  Hopefully I will have one here to use.  Thank you for helping with this.  Each of these film strips have 100 or so pictures ... great stuff.  Bring it back from Kentucky if it is not too much trouble ... just in case.

Congratulations!    If you have problems with recording the filmstrips, I have an idea that might work.

Here is a link to the Movie File being built ... careful as it is 15MB.
At this point there is no audio but the 109 frames are linked together into a movie file.

Cartridge resoldered back in ... needle installed ... record played through the amp and out the speaker ... hip hip. Now how to digitally record it? :)
Title: Re: K-F Training Film Strips
Post by: kaiserfrazerlibrary on December 16, 2012, 10:28:34 AM
A couple of thoughts.  first, is the speaker plugged into the amp or hard-wired?  You should be able to get a cable from BEST BUY or RADIO SHACK with the proper plug on one end to go into the amp and the other into the audio input of a VHS or DVD recorder.  If you have a LINE OUT or similar type connection at the amp this will be a breeze.  Otherwise the amp volume will have to be next to nothing (start with no volume and come up slowly, listening to the TV sound for best quality-you may have some krackle and distortion).

As for TV, a video camera on a tripod can work.  You are not lip-syncronizing so the sound/picture match should not be a problem.  Position the camera so all but the edges of the projector's frame appear on the TV screen  when you get it, lock it down.

If you can get it on a VHS tape, I can copy the tape onto a DVD.   Quality should be same as what is on the tape.

When you are all set, try a strip, play the recording back and see if you are happy with the quality.

DO NOT USE MICROPHONE TO SPEAKER IF YOU CAN AT ALL AVOID IT FOR CAPTURING SOUND!.

Last Night I did a microphone capture on the sound and merged it with the Filmstrip.  Not highest quality but quite acceptable.  Take a listen.

Unfortunately, this is normal.  The plastic is highly attractive to static which pulls in the tiny bits of dust and airborne debris which over time "irritates" the grooves.

Dave's package arrived today!!
Let the learning begin ... These are not Filmstrips and records - these are Sound Slide Films!
I now believe these Sound Slide Films were not at every dealer but used at the KF Service School in Willow Run and/or possibly used by Traveling Instructors.
Dave's package has three Slide Films to match up with previous audio only records.
Three new sound and Video films and three new videos only.
I guess you would say I am in digitizing heaven!!
THANKS DAVE

Distributors were allowed to obtain copies of the visual presentations used at the factory and by the field service reps so they could conduct their own trainning sessions to help the dealers in their territories.  Factory-owned distributorships were supposed to have full sets for just such use.

So Factory class room training backed up by training using at distributor locations regionally.  The big spots located on this 1947 advertisement would be those distributorships.

That is correct.  Graham-Paige (and after January 1947 Kaiser-Frazer) divided the 48 states into 150 sales territories.  Not all territories had distributors at all times.  Starting in 1948, the company began switching some of the smaller operations into Parts & Accessories distributors rather than Cars, Parts & Accessories.  Another re-alingment in 1952 turned more of the old guard into P&A only.

The Overdrive training video has two records of which I only have access to the second one so the first 10 minutes is silent but once it gets into diagnosing the electrical components  it works like a champ.

Good News on the K-F Service Filmstrip Project.  Rudy Phillips has stepped up with the 6 missing records to finish the 1948 Filmstrips.  Plus some new Filmstrips even some 1951 Model and HJ ones ... no records but someone else may have them.  Both Overdrive records!  Both Clutch Repair Records!

I have the filmstrip scripts for sales presentation of the 1951 Kaiser and 1951 Henry J (I don't think they had records but I could be wrong).  If these are among what you've acquired and have no records for, I can scan the scripts and sent them out to you.  Maybe you could enlist the services of a "narrator" to lay down the voice tracks!
Title: Re: K-F Training Film Strips
Post by: pnw_oldmags on February 07, 2013, 02:02:27 PM
If you can scan those scripts for the 1951 Kaiser and the 1951 Henry J Filmstrips that would be great.

Just holdlng the film up to the light it appears to be sales information not how to service them.

I sure appreciate all the support on this project!!

I will take a shot at being the narrator.  IF that does not work I will find someone with a better radio voice.

Jim

There were a couple films that Kaiser-Frazer put together under the heading of sales training (as opposed to the two versions of WORD OF HONOR).  My copies are not perfect but viewable.   Problem is I don't know about posting a full half-hour somewhere.

I will be staying on the Filmstrip posting until I get through the stack of records and Filmstrips Rudy sent up.  I want to get these valuable resources back to their respective collections.  I am truly greatful to Dave Hollen and Rudy Phillips for letting me borrow their stuff for digitizing.  And of course to Seth Jones for giving me the first 6 records and filmstrips to catch my interest.  And don't forget Jack Mueller who has sent me the scripts for the 51 Kaiser and 51 HJ filmstrips.  Now I just have to get up the nerve to record the scripts and match them up with each frame of the filmstrips.  What a TEAM you are correct wnyfrzr!  Travel On,

Thanks for the kind words and the Quarterly offer but I do believe I have the complete set.  Funny you would suggest that I start back on Quarterlies.  Don C and I just this week looked through 30 or more  quarterlies until we found an article we were looking for about Carolinas written by William Deloney.  If the quarterlies were on line with a index in a database it would be two or three clicks and walla.  Have a great weekend. Jim,

Your "board" was in the Purchasing Department of Kaiser-Frazer at Willow Run.  Items on the boards (there was more than one at any given time after mid-1947) showed parts that the company would entertain competitive quotes on from capable vendors.  It is one of the tools that Leo (L.S.) MacKay and others used to try and reduce parts prices as the vendors supplying the items knew that they might be undercut if the quality and delivery was consistent with the existing source.
