Post by: Corsairdeluxe on January 16, 2013, 10:43:00 AM
It sells friday. I'm guessing $18,500

My guess would be closer to $12,000 - older restore and not a Chevy.  Please post final bid.

If it were next door and $12,000, it would have a new home quickly.

Sounds like I should up the insurance on our Henry J.  I will watch this auction closely.  Hope you are correct!  Jim

Before we all go and run to the hills, there are a couple of questions that should be properly answered?

1.  Can B-J certify that the car was original?

2.  Was the buyer a club member (cars in the FOR SALE department of the bulletin normally go for less)?

3.  Was there a particular history to the car?

4.  Was there a particular connection for the member?

All of these points can clarify the pricing on this.  Also, who was the buyer in relation to the seller?

I'm pretty sure that car was former KFOC member Ron Hughes' car. If so, it consistently got gold at Nationals and other KFOC meets. Ron Hughes left the club in 2005 when it was announced that the National was to be held in Flagstaff.  A lot of people were rubbed the wrong way by him. I don't know if he's still around but I'm guessing that's his car. My dad was at the auction - he sold his '51 J last summer for the same price. It was in comparable condition.
It's interesting that the ad lists "padded dash" as an option. The padded dash was standard on the 1953 Corsair Deluxe.

Using the bulletin as a pricing guide is in my expererience, highly questionable. Having listed cars in it I firmly believe that most respondents think there is a mint beauty in a barn waiting for them ,failing that ,there is a widow who does not know the value of her late husbands treasure and they will be the first to reach her. Bottom feeder is to good for a lot of the folks who respond to your add, regardless of how strongly you say your price is firm.

After the deal is worse, I have run into outright scoundrels including some very high profile KFOCI’ers. My experience with strangers on ebay has been way more ethical than my dealings with my KFOCI brothers through the bulletin.
I am not alone. Alan Thomas listed a GREAT 51 HJ in the bulletin. Even though he stated a firm price, he said every single response was an attempt to beat him down. He withdrew is add , listed it on ebay, sold it for $ 2,000 more than he asked in the bulletin in a straight no nonsense  purchase,

Jim ... Price. They have a 10 % fee to both seller and buyer. The seller got  $14,850.The buyer paid $18,150.

I'm looking. If it had been local I might have paid $14,000 if it indeed was a gold level car.I think the Barrett results are not out of line.

And on the flip side, when some of those purchasers found out what others sell for within the club, they kick themselves for paying as much as they did.

Of course, there are those who fall in love with a vehicle and as a result have to have THAT car, and as long as they can afford it, they don't mind paying more.  This is OK in my opinion.  Problem is that the market trend for K-F products is down and upcoming issues of OLD CARS PRICE GUIDE will have lower values for various makes including Kaiser-Frazer products.

We all have our opinions and observations and who is to say who is more correct? I do not believe Henry J prices are down. I do not follow other Kf cars and can not address their markets.

If you will move the PNW I will match you up with a very nice 52 HJ Corsair Deluxe ... Cape Verde Green I do believe.  But I really hesitate help move cars out of our Region.  As I remember it is as nice as this Barrett Jackson Vehicle and the owner would be thrilled at $12,000

I'm in Melboure Fla now . I was in SoCal. Doug posted a lot of pics of his car. It is a six ,but it has plaid inserts instead of the usual cut pile and they look GREAT with that green color.Fla. to PNW would be a killer, but I towed a 53J with my Tundra from L.A. here. Not fun , but doable and everyone knows we KFers are not into these cars because of our intellegence!
