This is the hood ornament that was in a box, that came with my 52 Henry J. Is it the correct one for my car?
-
any one have recommendation as to where I can find a new cone?
-
Check with Mike Fleming at Tarheel K-F parts. Seems like I remember seeing some complete NOS ornaments 'similar' to that, but not sure about individual pieces. His emails is mbfleming@aol.com

The ornament in the picture you posted is a '51 HJ ornament. There were two types used on '52 Js depending on if it was an "early" or "late" '52.
The '52 Henry J Vagabond (refered to as "early" in most factory literature) had this type -

The '52 Henry J Corsair and Corsair Deluxe had this ornmanent

The '52 Corsair type is a tough one to find. Since there were almost twice as many '51 HJs produced as there were '52 - '54s combined, you see a lot of '52 - '54 Js with '51 ornaments on them as that one (and parts for it) is more abundant.

Dave, I have a 52 HJ hood ornament on my list. Rechromed show chrome w/NOS tip and wing. Mike
-
I'd say grab it up - those do not show up very often, and may not again.
-
BD.. Since your hood ornament is in a box, there's a good chance you do not have hood stifner rods. The rods make a big difference in the rigidity and fit of the hood.Fid might be able to post a shot for you. They do not seem to appear in either the parts or service manual.
-
Wacky Dave's HUGE collectin of hood ornaments. My 53's in there some where.

Hood stiffners? Are they installed with a right hand or left hand crescent wrench? They go on hood right above the blinker fluid reservoir if the car had turn signals??
I assume they stiffen the hood in the off chance I jump on the hood???
Corsair Deluxe, thanks for alerting me to it. Anyone have a picture of hood stiffners?
-
The hood stiffening rods were introduced on the 1952 Corsairs and they make a huge difference. The hood will wobble and twist big time without them. They're easy to make if need be. I can get a picture when I get home.
-
BD ...Nix to the cresent wrench, only a goverment employee would use them.A concrete block stretcher might help. Dave ,if your big self jumps on that hood, aint nothing gonna save it!

Old thread already but I did want to post the fact that the "hood stiffening rods" are indeed listed in the Henry J parts book. They were introduced on the '52 models and they are listed in the 1952-53 Henry J Parts Supplement, under section 18.100 - Hood, as "Brace, Front." It says the K523, K524 (B series, which is Corsair/Corsair Deluxe and not Vagabond), K533 and K534 cars each have two and they are part number 213460. My '52 Vagabond did not have them but the guy I got the car from had lots of '53 parts among it. Lucky for me, in the trunk was a set of these hood braces. I've always had a '53 which had them standard, and when I got the Vagabond it was easy to see why they are needed! The hood wobbles like crazy without them and I think that's the reason why you see so many '51s with cracked/missing corners on hood mouldings. I installed them right away.
They are easy to make if need be, 1/4" round stock or even a stiff, flat metal strip would work. They are fairly concealed when installed. If we ever get a Spring here, and I can get my cars out, I'll take pictures and post.

I don't have the 52-53 Parts supplement, that may be a problem.

You may be in luck as it is online for you.

And just so you know, the supplement contains no pictures/diagrams

After Fids post, I recalled that there was a small parts book in the car that I recall seeing. Lo and behold, I found it. Found what Fid is referring to. My 7 year old wants to know why no pictures in this. Book useless with no pictures of how to do it.
-
Thanks Jim, that book looked familiar. I remembered seeing this one in one of the boxes. Totally forgot I had it. This looks same but only 1952.
My 7 year old says it is a bad book. Bad because it has no pictures. How you suppose to use it if there are no pictures? Lol
-
The purpose of the Parts Catalog was to allow dealers/technicians to order replacement parts as opposed to assisting in assembly/repair work. I'm sure that when that book was compiled and published no one was thinking that 60 years later someone might want to know how things go together! The books are still useful for identifying what's common on certain makes/models which fasteners were used etc. It would be great if it had illustrations but I guess that's why we have this forum now.

Dave,

He will be happy to see pictures. I will show him tonight online.

Although it was pretty dark in the shed, I did also take a picture of the hood support "braces" as the parts book calls them. See if this helps:
(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3da01b3127ccef2bd6c7864d000000030O01SatmLdmyB7efAA/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00203070160520130420225838392.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/)
This is the under side of the hood. You can see the braces bolt to the hood ornament fastening bolts, then anchor on the corner of the hood. They really help.
-
Thanks Fid, that helps. My car is definitely missing them. I will have to fabricate some.
-
Getting ready to fabricate hood stifners. How are the hood stiffeners attached to the hood? Hood ornament bolts on one end, other end goes to what???
-
Thanks Fid for emailing on this. Think I know it all now
