Title: 4 cyl distributor shaft
Post by: Henry's HenryJs on May 14, 2013, 08:28:53 AM
I am modifying a Chevy 8 cyl HEI distributor to fit the 4 cyl in the HJ and found the notch in the oilpump to be offset, as well as the dist shaft. Does anyone know why K/F, Willys  would offset the notch in the oilpump and the distributor pin. Having only worked on GM and Fords I have never seen this. I can disassemble the oilpump and mill the slot on center to match the Chevy distributor. Any thoughts?

If the notch were centered then the shaft could be inserted in both the correct positin and 180 degrees out of position. The off center approach only allows it to go on in the correct way. Please show pictures when you are through.

That is quite interesting. I would love to do something like that but I don't have the machining or aluminum welding facilities. Lacking that, I would have looked at Chrysler distributors. HJ & Jeep 4 cylinders used several different distributors but the the most common were Autolite which became Prestolite which got converted to Chrysler electronic ignition distributors.

Thanks ETEX for the info, I used the Chev distributor because I have many parts from all my years building Chevy's, so there is no cost to me. There is no welding involved in this project. Henry
