Title: Tin plate toy 1948 Kaiser from Occupied Japan
Post by: 84RabbitGTI on January 02, 2014, 12:28:06 AM
Our latest, the tin plate toy 1948 Kaiser from Occupied Japan.  Bought it off e-bay a few months ago.  I think they are fairly common.
The center post in the middle of the hood is supposed to have a steering wheel on it to steer the center wheel hidden in the center of the chassis.  It also has a key-winding spring loaded motor in it.

The convertible was manufactured by Toy Founders of Detroit. It's based on a 49K convertible.

In addition to playing with KF I also play with model trains.  I recently bought a KF car to put with my train layout.  Mine is blue and is not a wind up car.  I think I am going to bead blast it and paint it Caribbean Coral when I paint my car.  That way they will match.

These originally had plated tin bumpers and a plastic windshield and steering wheel.  Toy Founders was based in Detroit and must have gotten word that K-F was going to come out with a convertible as their first ads showed the toy with a 1948 style grille.  The toy would wind up and steer and go in reverse as well as three speeds forward and came in five different colors.  The toy retailed for $2.98 in 1949 but I had to pay $400 for mine new in the box.  These are quite hard to find in nice condition today due to their plastic body that easily warped and most have lost some of their parts especially the windshield, bumpers, head lights and hub caps.

There is also a very rare green version of the one Gordie posted. I had one a few years ago but I sold it to fund other projects. Now I'm thinking maybe I should have kept it.
