Title: Broken exhaust manifold
Post by: j762538 on September 11, 2014, 12:51:16 PM
The 51 started making an exhaust leak noise and this is what the shop found. They are going to try to fix but any idea where I could get one?

Try Rudy Phillips, a vendor down the road from you in Ramona. He's at rudyskfparts@sbcglobal.net

Unfortunately the 51's are know for this.  Be extra careful with a replacement.  Torque it down carefully from the inside out alternating the sides, like torquing a wheel.  The '51's are not like the '49's, btw.  Search the forum "manifold" for other stories, including mine.

The casting itself was not the best of parts due to the way the foundry made it and the grade of materials used to produce it.  Remember that when our cars were new few if any expected them to be around as long as they ended up.

Notice you normally do not have the same problem with the exhaust manifolds on Henry J or Allstate automobiles.  The Willys engine castings were made at Wilson Foundry (a division of Willys-Overland) which had better manufacturing equipment than the K-F owned foundry at Dowagiac.

Look at the picture in the first post; it needs to be curved not straight.  A 1952 will work fine but 53 and later will not.

Hey guys, mine too is cracked.

So you're saying that there is no fix for those manifolds ? No possible welding of some kind ?  :'(

The manifold jake posted is an intake for the 47-50 1bbl carb 226 engines.

It can be welded but the person has to know what they are doing. It is a specialized process.
