All three are overdrive solenoids...the two that look alike fit a KF if they're 6V. The third unit is definitely not KF.

I thought that third one was Darrin. Good call. The other two look like the longer style ones which were used on the early (pre 1951) KF cars. The earlier style will fit the J too. I don't know if Kaiser is like that.

Interesting. I never had to pull the transmission on my car (#30) so I was unaware of the adapter used. I learned something new!

What was the purpose of this exercise? I thought the forum was to discuss club and related matters and to get help with our cars.

Logan has a point. Jake and others should get the parts books for their respective automobiles; those books can be very helpful as would the factory service manuals.
Reprinted MOTOR or MOTOR AGE summary mechanical books don't go into the detail on how to fix certain types of problems and don't give the full set of factory diagnostics.

I agree with you.
Many times I am hard-pressed to understand the meaning/intent/worth of various postings.
I have friends and family that spend much-to-much time on facebook with "ramblings".
Often this forum has taken that form.

My two cents
Not every topic has to interest me and some do not. So what? Nobody forces me to read them and I don't. The Forum is a free form online activity for Kaiser Frazer owners and enthusiasts. If they wish to talk about Divco, Crosley or uncle Otto's white mule so what. One man's rambling is another's intellectual diversion. If one of my forum friends suddenly gives up cars for pole dancing, I'd like to know.

I've kept my editorializing to minimum on here but I'll admit I'm confused. There are plenty of topics on here which do not interest me but it's real easy to skip them and go on to the next. I'm trying to understand, what is wrong with someone who has a lot of parts inherited from a deceased relative coming on here and asking what they are. I thought the purpose of a club/forum was to share information about topics related to KF cars. I'm curious as to how a thread, where the president of the club admittedly learned something, can be of no worth?
Regarding consulting parts books - there are a dozen or so of them so if someone doesn't know what a part is how are they supposed to know which one to look it up in? In addition, many parts (over drive solenoids come to mind) are not shown in illustrations in the book and some are artist renderings which are misleading. I'm still here to help if someone needs it.

Just my opinion, but I think the parts posts:
1) Help keep the forum more active
2) Provide a "puzzle" with some entertainment value- just what the heck is this part?
3) Help the original poster when someone figures it out
4) Are completely on topic - K-F related. Many forums are overrun with spam that is not in any way related.

Thanks for addressing my question. It was not originally clear to me whether Jake actually knew what the part was for or whether he was testing others' knowledge, and that is why I asked what the purpose of the exercise was. I would never say someone should not post something like that, I was only wondering, with no offense intended.

They're new but not cheap.
Seems strange you would have 3 that don't work as they are not really prone to failure. How are you testing them? You need a good strong battery and heavy cable/wire (jumper cables work well) to test them as they take lot of current (almost 20 amps) to operate. I remember some claimed they had some bad ones but that was because he was trying to test them using a 6 volt battery charger! That won't work, the charger can't supply the 20 amps needed activate them. Another thing you can try is open one and clean the pull-in contacts. If those contacts are burnished it won't activate. I had some pictures somewhere but I can't find them now. There are two sets of contacts inside them, the one that will cause it to not operate are the larger contacts.

Have your parts house check the Borg-Warner Overdrive catalog. Same as Mercury and others of period using overdrive. Cost these days around $200-250 or more each, retail.

The last one I saw on eBay was $400. 00 new in the box. We had a member at one time that reproduced the plastic parts but they are no longer available. Because they were an extra cost accessory few were purchased and they are quite scarce in good condition today.

This is too bad that there was at one time someone reproducing these. This is the kind of thing you will not find outside the club. I do not own a 49K, but this would be a very good item if the manufacturing fund could reproduce it.
