Thanks, that is one of the best overdrive articles that I have seen.  I printed it out for future use. Six of my cars have overdrive including Frazers, De Soto, Allstate, Studebaker and Hudson.

Great article, that proves that automotive ideas are not new, but advances in technology make those ideas better. Case in point, the new automatic transmissions are basically overdrives in the top gears. Five speed autos have 4th and 5th as OD. If it's an 8 or 9 speed, the last 3 gears are OD. Oh yeah, the Model T transmission was nothing more than a planetary transmission that was manually operated. Ain't technology great!

I wonder what Ford trucks last used the OD and what engines were they hooked up to. I have a 1964 Econoline with a 170 cid six and would love to replace the straight 3-speed with an OD 3-speed.

I don't believe that the Econolines ever offered overdrive but the big Ford six and eight cylinder trucks did.

Wow, that is great info and is just the sort of "user guide" I'd been hoping to find.

Thanks for posting!
