Title: Nice 51
Post by: Corsairdeluxe on March 02, 2016, 09:48:35 AM
looks interesting. I think the steering column being the same color as the car indicates a repaint. The wear on the steering wheel says it did not stay in the gar ge much.

All vinyl upholstery car so it's a bit unusual. Every all-vinyl HJ I ever saw had the steering column and molding painted the same color as the car so I say it's original. The carb and air cleaner aren't but those are easily corrected.
Here's a recent thread on the "all vinyl" '51 Js -

And yes, it looks pretty good.

The windlace is also gator vinyl and it has the passenger side kick panel pocket. I guess that means the all vinyl interior is original. It has a trunk and it appears to have a fold down rear seat.
I wish it was closer.
Enough has been done to it to prompt thought. It is missing the fan shroud. The carb and air cleaner are volunteers. The fresh air vent knock outs are missing and covered with duct tape. No battery in photos and small gauge cable. Still good looking HJs do not come along very often

It is missing the fan shroud

The six cylinder cars do not have this. It was used on the four cylinder cars because the engine was back so far it was necessary to "tunnel" the air from the fan, into the radiator. The six doesn't need it.

Here's one for sale that was originally all vinyl upholstery.  It's got the '51 grill and the later tail lights which you see quite often.
NOTE: It has the steering column molding color coordinated just as all others I've seen with this upholstery.

Let  us know if you do AT.  It's 70 degrees here today. I went out to the shed and started all of my cars. Now, if I want to make it snow again all I have to do is bring one home!

Yes, Terry, the correct name for the gator or lizard vinyl IS Dragon vinyl. And remember, there was even a dinosaur vinyl, though I don't know if any HJ's ever got Dino hides.

Correct - all Henry Js had rubber mats originally. I have Edgar Kaiser's Henry J here and it has carpeting but it's trim code 888 (factory special).  That's the only exception I've seen.
