Title: Changing from a 4 to a 6 cylinder
Post by: Quadromaniac on May 28, 2012, 04:30:20 PM
After about a year of debating ,I am finally changing the motor on my 53 Allstate. The 4 has a cracked block. The 6 I have is from a 53 as well. After removing all the front sheet metal and grill, removing the old motor was not to bad. But the front towers for the motor mounts are not the same. I recieved 2 towers when i bought the motor, but their not correct for this replacement. I think they came from a Kaiser. I am now dead in the water. Does anyone know where to locate more towers for this replacement? Any help is appreciated. I am located just outside of Phoenix, AZ.

and it has the correct towers in that picture.  The ones for a six cylinder mount in different holes. There are 6 holes on each side. The towers used four of them. The four cylinder type used the outer-most set and the center set. The six cylinder type used the center and the inner-most holes.  The inner holes may be plugged by debri as they were on my '52 Vagabond when I did it. I had to poke around with a screwdriver to eventually find them. If you take the new towers and line up the outer holes on the tower with inner holes in the cross-member used by those for the four, then the inner holes on the new towers should line up with inner-most holes in the cross-member. You may  have to poke dirt/grease etc. out of them but they should be there.

Thanks for the information. You were right. I had not cleaned enough of the grease and crud from the frame. The other 2 holes were about 2 inches further in It is so nice to ask a question and get an answer that solves all of these problems.

Great news! I had the benefit of having another car to look at when I did it. I was confused as hell... those inner holes on mine were so packed with crud you couldn't see them at all. Had I not had the other car here I don't know what I'd have done. Good luck with the rest of the work. If you need the throttle linkage, let me know, I have it.

I think I am good now. I picked up the throttle linkage from one of the guys here in the club. Mark Steele had it. Thanks for the offer anyway. I have one of the towers bolted in place already but the temp is  100 degrees and I am out in the open. I think I will continue when it is a little cooler.

We found what looked like another crack on the side after we pulled the 4 out.

Bill,

Glad to see that you are making progress.   You are Hard Core, doing that work in the open during these hot days in the Valley of the Sun.

This is for FID or anyone else out there.   I need a throttle linkage as seen in the picture attached.   The part that mounts to the body.   I also need the bracket that mounts on the radiator for a Darrin, the one with the bolt holding the top of the radiator to the body.

That part I do not have. I would suggest starting a new thread as this one is 3 years old and likely irrelevant at this point.
